Exercise Right Week

‘Exercise Right Week’ is an annual event, organised by ESSA (Exercise and Sports Science Australia). This year it runs during the last week of May, with the stated aim of encouraging everyone in Australia to become more physically active and to include regular exercise sessions in everyday life.

Turramurra Sports and Spinal Physio is 100% behind ESSA’s aim! 9.5 million Australians either, have minimal physical activity or lives that are almost completely sedentary! These figures were published by the Department of Health here in Australia, in 2014 in their ‘Be Active For Life’ leaflet and highlight the worrying prospect that with 56% of Australian adults already falling into this lifestyle category, the next generation, our children and teenagers, are replicating this trend.

What Are The Benefits of Regular Exercise?

It seems that exercise can be a huge benefit in terms of reducing the likelihood of serious health conditions including some cancers, cardiovascular problems and Diabetes (Type 2). It can also be of benefit for our mental health, lessening the risk of depression, improving concentration, feelings of well-being and self-esteem. Whether you choose to participate in group sessions, work out at the gym or keep fit at home with walking, gardening, etc., being more active can help to lose those excess kilograms and help you to get back in shape.

All that being said Turramurra Sports & Spinal Physiotherapy want to point out that, while exercise can bring huge benefits, it could be risky to embark on an exercise program without the blessing of your GP and the support of a healthcare practitioner, such as a Sports and Spinal Physiotherapist.

What worked for your friend, family member or colleague, may not be right for you. Each of us is different, with diverse physical challenges, so each exercise plan needs to be as individual as you are! We are enthusiastic about ESSA’s aim of getting everyone to, ‘Exercise Right’! In other words, to be physically active in a way that is right for them, taking into account any pre-existing health, mobility or injury issues they may have.

How Can Turramurra Sports & Spinal Physio Help?

At his Turramurra practice, Paul and his colleagues see many patients who would like to be fitter, in order to lose weight, improve their general health, or to recover from an injury.

In some cases, the main concern is knowing where, or how to begin on becoming more physically active, especially if the person has led a largely sedentary life for many years.

For others, there are many concerns including having mobility problems affecting their joints, being overweight or obese, or being under the care of their GP or Hospital Doctor for a long-term health concern.

The team at Turramurra Sports and Spinal Physio can help by combining the traditional values of providing the very best in patient care, with state of the art facilities to provide treatments including:

  • Joint mobilisation to help recover from injury, improve joint mobility and provide pain relief
  • Pre and post-surgery rehabilitation, to help you get in the best shape possible before your operation – and to regain fitness afterwards.
  • Provision of an exercise prescription or program: This is especially helpful for those who have not exercised for a long time and who are not sure how to begin, as well as for those who have ongoing health problems and need to take extra care when beginning an exercise program.
  • The team can help you to achieve your fitness and lifestyle goals and to achieve the weight loss you need, if appropriate.
  • Using the latest technology with Real Time Ultrasound, Computerised Biomechanical GaitScaning and EMG for biofeedback.
